If you understand the meaning of “liberalism,” then you’ll understand that the United States is perhaps history’s most shining example of liberal ideals. Being a liberal is nothing to be ashamed of, as conservatives would have you believe. Everything about America is liberal — our freedoms, our open-mindedness, our tolerance, our dedication to progress, our determination to protect the rights of the individual. The word “liberal” is rooted in the Greek “liber,” which means “free.” The dream of a free United States was the liberal dream of our forefathers and the brave men and women who fought and died for our independence from Britain. Opposing them were not only Britain’s redcoats, but the conservatives of the time, who remained loyal to King George III. Yes, the forefathers we revere were decidedly liberal, and so were such historic figures as Martin Luther and Jesus Christ — all instruments of profound change. Who would deny this heritage?
Liberalism shouldn’t need defending, but it does. Good people are instinctively liberal and in favor of fairness. Conservatives understand this, and understand that the only way they can concentrate the wealth of this country into their hands and the hands of their friends is to vilify our founding principles.
Much of what appears here will be opinions that result from connecting a few dots. Do I think conservatives really hate children, for example? Well yeah, but I base that opinion on their words and actions, not my personal bias. I would have never come to this conclusion had they not placed such emphasis on cutting or ending programs that keep children healthy and alive. They might not actually say they hate kids, but they don’t seem to be bothered that many might go hungry when their food is cut off. Theirs is a “We don’t have the money” attitude. A liberal’s is “We’ve got to find a way.”
Sometimes a light bulb goes off, and I have to write something down to see if it makes sense. But I always try to have my facts straight. I do know how to look things up.
