Protect equally

What stupid arguments against gay marriage I still hear. I heard this one again today: Marriage is a natural condition, based on human procreation, so it must be between a man and a woman. Children need a mother and father.

What hogwash. Procreation is a biological process, and marriage is not a precondition for success. Ask Bristol Palin. It can even take place in a laboratory now. Not nearly as much fun.

Meanwhile, many children are raised by a single parent. What do we do about that? Would we make divorce illegal, in order to preserve this family unit? Would a widowed parent be required to replace the departed spouse — or be assigned one? Would childless couples be held in contempt of something?

Those who mask their bigotry by claiming the prohibition of gay marriage is in the best interests of children should consider what it would be like to have a law prohibiting marriage between Baptists and Episcopalians of the opposite sex, in order to avoid household squabbles that might confuse the kids and make them become Goths.

Nah. It’s all dumb. The 14th Amendment is pretty clear about equal protection. If the law gives consenting adults the right to marry at all, then the law cannot limit that right for any reason. You can’t make exceptions for race, religion, educational background, economic status — or gender. And then there’s this: it’s nobody’s business.

Update: In response to the Justice Department’s decision to refuse to defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), House Republicans have decided to defend it. Don’t you have anything better to do, folks?
